The Hungry Gap? Not when you have a Sprout mini-greenhouse! 🌱

The hungry gap is a period in spring when there is little or no fresh produce available from a vegetable garden - usually in April, May and early June in the UK. It's because the winter crops have ended, but the new season’s plantings are not yet ready to harvest.

With our smart mini greenhouses there is no such thing as the hungry gap. You can grow food all year round and harvest something every single day of the year if you wish!

Gardening and growing food with kids is absolutely wonderful but also a little bit crazy! Sometimes all your efforts are eradicated in a second when a small but mighty tornado whizzes past 🌪

So, why should we grow food with our children?

They learn so much in the garden. About nature, wildlife, flowers, vegetables, berries, fruit, as well as many valuable life lessons. They also learn to deal with disappointment when things go wrong, be patient and wait for things to grow, be responsible and to care for something, have fun, be proud of their achievements, be kind to our planet and wildlife and to connect with nature 🐦 🌱

It's a fantastic opportunity to teach your children to eat seasonally, to eat vegetables that are wonky and blemished, to harvest, and to prepare and cook the food. They also get fresh air and exercise as an added bonus!

When they learn all the effort that goes into growing veg they're also less likely to waste it. Isn't all of this absolutely amazing to teach our children?

Today is Earth Day and this year’s theme is "Invest In Our Planet. What Will You Do?" 🌎

We believe that growing your own food can be one of the best things you can do for our precious planet. Food miles, chemicals, pesticides, plastic and food waste can all be drastically reduced whilst also increasing biodiversity and creating a wildlife haven.

Rather than supporting big scale monocultures, which are very problematic for the environment, you can create your own edible paradise in the space that you have already got. We have a great article on our website about why growing your own food is good for the environment. (Link in bio and on stories today!) 🌱
